Michael van Gerwen continued his perfect preparation for the World Darts Championship by collecting his fourth consecutive TV title with victory at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead on Sunday.

The world number one and 2014 World Champion is determined to recapture the title he surrendered to Gary Anderson in January and has responded to that defeat in sensational fashion.

He has reached the final of every major final this season and his Players Championship success followed glories in the Masters, UK Open, World Matchplay, European Championship, Grand Slam and World Series.

“I’ve been the best player of the year by far and I’m playing the best darts of my career but I need to continue that to win the World Championship,” said van Gerwen, who will meet the winner of a preliminary round game between Thanawat Gaweenuntawong and Rene Eidams in his first round match.

“It is really special to win four big tournaments in a row but the one I really want is the World Championship. This is the one we all want to win and it is the one we work all year for.

“When I did win it it was the best feeling of my life and I want to experience that again.”

van Gerwen proved unbeatable on his way to winning the Players Championship title, where he defeated Keegan Brown, Vincent van der Voort, Dave Chisnall, Daryl Gurney and Adrian Lewis to seal victory.
