MICHAEL VAN GERWEN defeated Peter Wright in the final of Players Championship six on Sunday to win his fourth title of 2017.

The world number one avenged his defeat to ‘Snakebite’ in the final of the German Darts Championship a week earlier with a 6-1 thrashing of Wright in Milton Keynes.

Van Gerwen was denied the chance to win his first Players Championship title of the year on Saturday when he lost out in an incredible semi-final against Adrian Lewis.

The Dutch ace missed double 12 for a nine-darter and was beaten 6-5 by eventual winner Lewis in a match that included 13 180s.

But MVG stormed to victory 24 hours later, finishing the decider with a brilliant 153 checkout.

“I’m very happy with how I played over the whole weekend and felt I deserved to win at least one of these titles”, said Van Gerwen.
