Michael van Gerwen continued his dominant form on the PDC’s European Tour by winning the Dutch Darts Masters in his homeland for the second consecutive year.

The world number one, who ruthlessly whitewashed Justin Pipe in the final, has now incredibly won all four European Tour events staged so far this season.

This title may feel like the sweetest of the quartert for van Gerwen, who successfully defended his crown in front of almost 5,000 fans in Venray.

“It feels amazing,” said van Gerwen, who has also won the UK Open, Masters and Dubai Masters in 2015.

“To win in Holland is very special for me because this is the only event here this year, and there was lots of pressure in front of my own fans and wanting to win this title again.

“This crowd made it quite easy because they were superb all the way through the event.

“I played some fantastic darts and I’m really enjoying my darts at the moment – and I want to keep this going now. This is the fourth European Tour event in a row for me and I hope I can add the fifth on in two weeks’ time in Riesa.”

van Gerwen’s route to the final included wins against Mensur Suljovic, Dave Chisnall, Mervyn King and Terry Jenkins – all of which saw ‘Mighty Mike’ post ton-plus averages.

And he continued that record in the decider, making light work of Pipe to collect another trophy.

van Gerwen will now turn his attentions to another title defence when he and Raymond van Barneveld represent The Netherlands in the World Cup of Darts, which begins in Frankfurt on Thursday.
