The world number one clinched victory in the first World Series event of 2015 with a fabulous comeback in a thrilling final against Taylor, in which he won the last five legs to triumph 11-8.
‘Mighty Mike’ had earlier seen off Adrian Lewis 11-9 in the semi-finals.“It’s a brilliant win for me and I’m really proud,” said van Gerwen, who defeated Raymond van Barneveld 24 hours earlier to reach the last four.
“It’s been an amazing tournament and really difficult. The games were so tough and I couldn’t wish for anymore. Every player played well in this event.
“This is the hardest tournament of the three of won here. To beat Raymond and Adrian is fantastic and it is always special to beat Phil in a final. I’m really glad to win again.”
Taylor had wrestled a slight advantage in the final with leads of 6-4 and 8-6 but van Gerwen produced a trademark surge, reeling off five legs without reply to seal the title.
The world series continues next month in Japan but van Gerwen will be back in televised action in a fortnight, when he and van Barneveld begin bid to defend the World Cup of Darts for the Netherlands.
