Dutch pair Michael van Gerwen and Vincent van der Voort where amongst the star performers at the World Grand Prix in Dublin but were both ultimately left disappointed after losing in the final and quarter-finals respectively.
van Gerwen seemed destined to successfully defend his title but was edged out in a deciding set by Robert Thornton in the final, while van der Voort missed out on a semi-final place after producing a couple of the best wins of his career.
The world number 16 knocked out Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor in straight sets in the first round, ending his TV hoodoo against the 16-time World Champion.
He then went on to take apart Terry Jenkins to reach the quarter-finals but that was where his journey ended, going down to Austria’s Mensur Suljovic.
World number one van Gerwen enjoyed victories against Keegan Brown, Kim Huybrechts, Jamie Lewis and Mark Webster before being defeated by Thornton in a thrilling final where ‘Mighty Mike’ hit an incredible 18 180s.
