MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is bidding to win the Grand Slam of Darts for a third successive year, while Dutch compatriot Berry Van Peer makes his debut at the £450,000 tournament in Wolverhampton.

The prestigious event gets underway on Saturday with both players in action.

Van Peer faces World Grand Prix runner-up Simon Whitlock in his opening Group H game in the afternoon session.

The 21-year-old, who qualified as last year’s PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship finalist, will also face Gary Anderson and Cameron Menzies.

World number one Van Gerwen kicks off his title defence with a Group A opener against Ross Montgomery on Saturday night.

He will also meet Rob Cross and Joe Murnan in the round robin stage.
