SENSATIONAL MICHAEL VAN GERWEN proved to be unstoppable in his quest for third European Championship title as he triumphed in style on Sunday in Belgium with a 11-1 demolition of Mensur Suljovic in the final.

The Dutch ace had survived a match dart in his comeback victory over Simon Whitlock in Friday’s first round but he bull-dozed his way through the field after that.

Saturday saw the world number one make light work of Gerwyn Price as he moved into the final day’s action.

Following an impressive quarter-final victory against Jelle Klaasen, van Gerwen posted some impressive statistics in an 11-7 win against James Wade to reach the final.

And the Dutchman upped his level even further in the decider as he stormed to glory by thrashing second seed Suljovic.

“It’s been a wonderful weekend for me,” said van Gerwen, who also heads to next weekend’s World Series final as defending champion.

“To win the same tournament three times is a very special achievement and something new for me. I got better and better throughout the tournament and played my best game in the final.

“I’m having a really good year. It’s my best ever but there’s still targets in my mind and I need to keep this form going to achieve them.”

van Gerwen has won a personal best of 22 titles so far in 2016.
