The world number one successfully defended a major title for the first time in his career as he defeated Gary Anderson in a last-leg shoot-out at the Eithas Arena in Hasselt.
van Gerwen trailed 10-7 before producing a trademark surge, where he reeled off four straight legs to claim victory.
van Gerwen’s final charge began on Sunday afternoon, when he defeated Dave Chisnall 10-4 with a 107 average and a brilliant 132 finish in the process.
He then saw off Peter Wright 11-7 despite losing six straight legs at one stage of their semi-final.
That win kept up his incredible record of having reached every major televised final since his semi-final defeat at the hands of Anderson in the World Championship in January.
Anderson’s semi-final success over Adrian Lewis gave ‘Mighty Mike’ the chance to get his revenge in a decisive showdown between the world’s top two players.
The pair were evenly matched early on with van Gerwen narrowly missing double twelve for a nine-darter.
But Anderson seemingly took control when he led 7-4 after winning four consecutive legs.
The next three legs were shared as Anderson moved within one of victory but the reigning World and Premier League champion was left stunned as van Gerwen produced a four-leg burst to snatch the title.
“It’s very special, especially the way that I won,” said van Gerwen, who averaged 107.28 in the final and 105.58 for the tournament.
“Gary was playing fantastic darts and I couldn’t find a way to put him under pressure because his scoring power at the right moments was fantastic.
“I was waiting for a mistake and when you get a chance you need to take it with both hands, and that’s exactly what I did. I fought for everything but I still don’t know where that finish came from.
“At 10-7 I won a leg on my own throw to make it 10-8, and then I knew it was now or never and I broke his throw, and I had a little feeling then that I was going to win.
“Maybe I played the four best legs of my career under this pressure and I’m really happy with that. It’s fantastic to win a tournament like this in that way.”
The tournament also saw impressive performance’s from van Gerwen’s fellow Z.W.A. stars Cristo Reyes and Rowby-John Rodriguez, who both reached the last 16.
