Michael van Gerwen won his first UK Open title after a magnificent display over a challenging three days at Minehead.

The world number one continued his sensational start to 2015 as he clinched his eighth individual PDC major title with victory over Peter Wright in Sunday’s final.

After dominating the qualifying events, the Dutchman had defeated fellow ZWA star Paul Nicholson in the the third round and Paul Hogan in round four to set up a last 16 clash against Kim Huybrechts.

There, he produced the performance of the tournament with a sensational 115 average in a 9-2 demolition of his Belgian opponent. van Gerwen also took out a maximum 170 finish and narrowly missed double 12 for a nine-darter in the final leg of the match.

He went on to see off Devon Petersen before overcoming gutsy Andrew Gilding in a thrilling semi-final, before defeating Wright 11-5 in the decider.

The win saw ‘Mighty Mike’ take his sixth ranking tournament victory since the World Championship, having competed in eight, reaching seven finals.

Full match reports are available to read on van Gerwen’s official website.
