MICHAEL VAN GERWEN was unable to claim a third consecutive BetVictor World Matchplay title as the world number one suffered a quarter-final defeat at the hands of Phil Taylor, who went on to win his 16th title in Blackpool.

ZWA’s other competitor in the prestigious tournament, Spain’s Cristo Reyes, lost out to eventual runner-up Peter Wright in the last 16 – after producing a brilliant performance in his first ever match on the Winter Gardens stage, as he averaged over 101 in a 10-3 victory over Robert Thornton.

Van Gerwen is taking August off to focus on the birth of his first child, while Reyes returns to action in Barnsley for a Players Championship double header next weekend.
