Michael van Gerwen picked up three honours at the PDC Awards Dinner on Thursday night at The Dorchester in London.
van Gerwen, who incredibly won 18 tournaments in 2015, collected awards for PDPA Players’ Player of the Year, ProTour Player of the Year and shared the prestigious PDC Player of the Year title with world number two Gary Anderson, who won the World Championship and Premier League in 2015.
“I’m really happy to win these awards,” said world number one van Gerwen.
“2015 was a fantastic year for me and I’m proud that has been recognised by my fellow players and the PDC. The biggest prize is, of course, the World Championship and I want to congratulate Gary Anderson for retaining that title. My aim is to win it back next year. There can only be one winner but I’m pleased to be able to share an award with Gary as I think we both had great seasons.
“Looking back on the year I want to also thank my management, sponsors and everyone at the PDC from the directors all the way to the markers, security and event staff that make everything possible and of course, most importantly to the fans for keeping coming to watch us and helping our sport grow to new heights.
“I’m really looking forward to the 2016 season, starting at The Masters this weekend. I want to retain that title and the begin my bid to win the Premier League. My ultimate goal is to become World Champion again and I will work hard to do that. It is nice to be world number one but I also want to be World Champion.”
van Gerwen returns to action in The Masters this weekend, where fellow ZWA ace Vincent van der Voort will also be in action, before the world number one begins his Premier League glory quest in Leeds next Thursday.
