World number one van Gerwen enjoyed victories over Leon De Geus and Terry Jenkins before being edged out by Jelle Klaasen in a last leg decider in the quarter-finals.

Number 13 seed Paul Nicholson was denied a place in the last eight by eventual runner-up Justin Pipe on Sunday after ‘The Asset’ had defeated Stuart Kellett on Saturday.

van Gerwen will now turn his attention to his Premier League Darts title defence. The Dutchman meets world number two Phil Taylor, who he beat in last year’s final, on the opening night in Liverpool on Thursday.
