The world number one, who won the inaugural World Series of Darts Finals last year when he also beat Wright in the decider, kicked off his title defence on Saturday with a 6-5 success against Gerwyn Price.

He then produced a sublime display to whitewash a helpless Simon Whitlock 10-0 in the quarter-finals.

And he was in an equally ruthless mood in the last four as he eased past Dave Chisnall 11-3.

The final proved more difficult against world number five Wright, who had come through a thrilling semi-final clash with Phil Taylor 11-10.

But van Gerwen fought off both the threat of his opponent and the noise of a vociferous Scottish crowd to close out an 11-9 victory and seal glory.

“I’ve played some great games here,” said van Gerwen, who will head to Wolverhampton next week for his latest title defence, the Grand Slam of Darts.

“The final wasn’t my best but I’m holding the trophy in the end and that is the most important.

“I’m in really good form but just taking it game by game and tournament by tournament because if you think further than that you lose focus.”
