Michael van Gerwen led the ZWA charge at the European Darts Matchplay in Innsbruck, Austria last weekend. The world number one picked up his fifth European Tour title of the year, while Austrian youngster Rowby-John Rodriguez also impressed in front of his home crowd.
van Gerwen defeated Dave Chisnall in the final following an epic last eight encounter with Rodriguez, in which the Dutch ace averaged 114.
Rodriguez, who had already seen off Simon Whitlock and Mervyn King, averaged 103 in his defeat to ‘Mighty Mike’.
Vincent van der Voort also reached the quarter-finals, thanks to victories against Andy Hamilton and Ian White, before losing out to Robert Thornton.
But it proved to van Gerwen’s weekend once again as he returned to winning ways, following up Saturday’s success over Ronny Huybrechts with wins on Sunday against Raymond van Barneveld, Rodriguez, Thornton and Chisnall.
